The Glocal Project…?

The Glocal Project is a cool program that our class has been taking part in for the past two weeks. We learned all about taking photos with a webcam and re-arranging them with two softwares: MotionSequence and MultipleExposure. I took at least 50 photos while we were in the Computer Lab, working with Josh-from Arts Umbrella in Vancouver- and Francesca-a voulenteer from Germany.

My favorite image that I took with Sophie, using MotionSequence is of Sophie’s battery charger:

I like it because it looks really neat and I like the border size on it. The photo was taken at a great angle so it looks bigger than it actually is. I think that the borders are a little big, but they still look good.

Creating the image was quite easy. Sophie had the little webcam, I was in control of the computer. She put the camera at the right angle, and I chose a grid size and border size. I pressed teh ‘H’ button ont eh keyboard to hide the contol panel at the top of my screen, where the buttons were that I could change the grid and border size, and a lot of other things that helped to make an image visually applealing. I hit the space bar-to take the photo.

Thank you to Josh and Francesca for taking the time to teach us all about Arts Umbrella and The Glocal Project!

Living (and Surviving) On The ISS

Astronauts, like Clay Anderson, have traveled to space. To the International Space Station to be exact!

Working on the ISS

I had figured that working (from four to seven months) on the ISS would be hard, and you wouldn’t be used to it. It turns out, though, by talking to an Astronaut named Clay Anderson on a web-cast conversation this morning, that it is actually quite easy!

“You can move into any position to do something. You can be upside down to do one thing, and sideways for another!” -Clay Anderson, Astronaut.

Back to the ISS. There are many jobs to do on the ISS. From installing robotics equipment to science/space experiments; conducting them as well as participating in them. Some experiments that Astronauts conduct are to understand things better, like micro gravity, life forms and many other things that they would have to have knowledge about.

Water and Personal Hygiene

So how would you survive without water? By drinking your own urine and sweat! It is purified and transformed into warm, or even hot drinking water. Ew, but it’s water. It’s actually cleaner that what we usually drink on Earth! Did You Know… In order to save water, NASA invented a special toothpaste that Astronauts can eat. That’s saving water all right!

What’s for Lunch?

Astronauts need food also to survive in space, but here’s a great question: when, how, and what do they eat? Well, Astronauts choose their menu 5 months in advance, meet with a dietician to help them decide what minerals and vitamins they’ll need while in space, and they make a final decision on their choice.

Every package has a colored sticker. The purpose of the sticker is to tell which astronaut has which package of food. The drinks they have are dehydrated, so they must add water to the powder mix.

Zzzzz…

Well, there’s the choice of sleeping on the wall, oh, there’s the floor, what else? Astronauts even have a bed… in SPACE! Their bedroom has a drawer for their belongings and any other personal things. When it is time to sleep, they grab their sleeping bag and clip it onto the floor, the ceiling or the wall. There is no up or down in space, so it doesn’t matter where you are. They zip up the sleeping bag, and their arms are not tucked in. That allows the arms to float around, but no more than the Astronaut can reach. It is usually very hard to get a good sleep, since there is always noise and bright lights, but they can use a little mask that covers the eyes so they can sleep better.

Space has always interested me, and I learned a lot from that web-cast with Clay Anderson. I hope you learned something from my post!

Remember Me

Remembrance Day is all about remembering. I (along with the rest of my class) drew a picture with water colour pencil crayons. My picture is all about remembering those who fought for our freedom. I believe that Remembrance is a very important thing when it comes to war. These brave-yet very young-soldiers in WWl went to war and had no experience in battle. I know that in 1917, the legal age for enlisting was 18. Also, Canada was responsible for a new battalion capturing Vimy Ridge. The chores were horrible, like draining the trenches, and digging latrines!

There were many, many sicknesses that you could get from the trenches: trench mouth, trench foot, shell shock, lice, and many more.

So many people died, and it was all because of war. If we can stop war, make peace, and get along, we’d all be lot better off, and not as many people would die. I estimate that at least 30% of people that die now are people who die in war.

Lest we forget, and let us remember.

I hope you like my picture, and tell me what you think!

Water Wise P.S.A.

We made special Public Service Announcements for entering a contest. The P.S.A.s were about being water wise. Max, Mitchell, and Brittany from our class were finalists, and 2 nice ladies from the Regional District office came and took pictures of the winning students, and our class all together (If you’d like to see my video, click here).

We all got recognized for our work on the P.S.A.s, and they gave us Smencils, which are pencils that smell like different things (bubblegum, root beer, tropical blast, cinnamon…etc.). Mine was bubblegum. Have you ever seen a P.S.A. on TV, or anywhere else? Have you ever made one?

My Ultimate 7

My favourite number is 7, and here’s why:

  1. My favourite grade so far was grade 3, and I was 7 at the time.
  2. I have 7 favorite singers: Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Lil’ Mama, JoJo, Taylor Swift, Dixie Chicks, and Ashley Tisdale.
  3. My favorite song is 7 Things.
  4. I have 7 Random Facts About Me on my blog. (Check a few posts down!!)
  5. It is a cool number because it is the only single digit that has 2 syllables.
  6. It is apparently very lucky.
  7. It takes 7 facts to complete this post.

Is there a lucky number you have, too?

Blog Action Day: Poverty and the Girl Effect

Today in class we saw 2 videos: “All I Need” and “The Girl Effect”.

It made me feel like I am lucky to have all I have, and have all I need. The two boys in the video are so different. One goes to school, one goes to work. One has many jobs, one has one job. One gets affection, one gets none. The way it was put together made it all that more interesting.

The Girl Effect video was my favourite though. This video has a very strong message. Girls can make the world better. They can make a difference. If you give girls a chance to get an education, they will make less poverty for their children, and they will support their families. If you giver her and education, let her get a job, make money, and support her family, she will make the world a better place for those in poverty.

The City of Ember

Our class has been reading “The City of Ember”. I think it’s very good so far!

The 2 main characters are Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow. They are both 12 and attend the same school. At 12, all students must be assigned a job. This day is called assignment day. The Mayor of Ember comes to their class holding a small bag. The bag is filled with papers. Each and every one of the 12 year old students takes a random paper and that is their job until they are 15. 3 years. Lina hopes to get the job of messenger, and Doon wishes for Electrician’s helper. When their turn comes, will they be assigned the job of their dreams?
